Allegros Return to Birmingham

The roads around Kings Norton In Birmingham were once again full of Allegros as the cars returned to their place of birth for the recent 35th Anniversary of the cars launch on May 18th.

Locals stood in amazement as more and more Allegros turned up at the Patrick Motors mesuem to join the celebrations. Over 60 cars , from pristine restored examples to everyday cars and restoration projects joined in the big drive home to Birmingham from all over the country.

The event marked the largest gathering of Allegros together in one place for many years and was quite a sight.

Visitors on the day included ex-production line workers from Longbridge who had many an intresting tale to tell! The day ended with an awards ceremony and the cutting of a huge "35th Birthday" cake.

As the event ended the streets of Birmingham were once again filled with the glorious sound of BLs finest gearboxes singing their distinctive tune!

Here's to the 40th!!!

Allegro to Mongolia

A Series 3 Allegro and its intrepid team of three Allegro Club International members are setting off for Mongolia in July. The car, driven by Vicki Spill, her brother Dominic and frield Patrick Sumby, was prepared on a strict budget with help from the club, by Simon Ayris, a professional preparer of classic cars for long distance rallies. You can read his report on www.simonsrallyprep.co.uk.

The car has received a recon-engine, 1275, having started out as an 1100 but it will be crossing half way round the Globe with a crew of three and luggage. Two inches of extra ground clearance have been found, mainly from inflating the suspension, but an inch was gained with the use of Avon 165 tall profile van tyres, of sixply rating to cope with rough roads.

Mongolia is three times bigger than France but the only tarmac is in the capital, Ulaan Bataar, and as few cross the country from one end to the other, the tracks that are well used only go to water wells or goat pens. It's possible to drive for days without seeing a soul.

The car was found as a low mileage (80,000) one owner car for £250, and has received 50 hours of work. It was driven to Exter very slowly to run it in, and now it's virtually ready to go - the rally starts from Hyde Park, London, on Saturday July 19.
